Another year, another spooktacular Halloween on Newport Island!
There was lots of fun reported across the island, with the MacGillivrays at 308 38th being visited by 51 Trick-or-Treaters! 52 if you count the drunk on their dock in his underwear.
When asked why he would climb out on their dock after jumping off the bridge instead of swimming to the beach, the good-natured drunk replied that it was a bad decision, he was sorry, and he wouldn’t do it again. While being helped off the dock and, on his way, he was asked why he kept his then soaking-wet socks on, and he replied that he had been making bad decisions all night!
Speaking of mischief, we’re happy to report the Mystery of the Missing Limbs has been solved! For those of you who weren’t aware, bones on the island have been disappearing and then reappearing on their own. Here’s an example of a vanishing leg on 400 40th Street.

After a citywide search, we’re happy to report that the bone thief has been found. It was Frankie, the friendly local Bernese Mountain Dog who lives off the island with his human, Kimmie.
Apparently, Frankie hasn’t met a bone that he didn’t want to chew. And he met a lot of them this Halloween season! At first, he was reluctant to part with his newfound chew toy, but Kimmie was able to trade a tasty treat for the bone and return the missing limb to its resting place. She was lucky all it took to bribe him was a Milk Bone and not an arm and a leg! (Groan!)
The Newport Island Halloween Party!
We had a great Halloween gathering! Approximately 60 people gathered at the park for a pre-Trick-or-Treat celebration that included food, treats, glow sticks, games, and a mystery table where kids touched spooky brains, hearts, eyeballs, and witches’ nails.
The costumes were great. We had everything from unicorns, dogs, cats, Mario Brothers, skeletons, Wednesday Addams, a T-Rex, a bushman (who kept blending into the background), and much more!
When the sun set, the crowd dispersed, and the Trick-or-Treating began. There were lots of Trick-or-Treaters this year (from on and off the island). Our Newport Island family came out in full force to hand out candy and support the kids. It was great! The candy selection was a big hit with Mr. Beast Bars being the new crowd favorite and the kids couldn’t stop talking about all of the full-sized candy bars that were handed out by SEVERAL very generous neighbors.
I would personally like to say thank you to Stevi Cabral, Stacy Eidem, Mona Bowerbank and Richard Wolpow for all their help setting up the event. Also, a heartfelt thank you to Kim & Ken Kierstad and Meredith Aston for their help in the clean-up effort.
As you can see from the pictures below, everyone had fun. Our favorite overheard quote was, “A candy bar a day keeps the monsters away!”
Thank you to all our island residents who helped make our Halloween terrific for everyone! And don’t forget…
Awesome!! So much fun and spirit, and great storytelling!
